TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Kingdom and Norway, two member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), have announced a historic defense agreement that allows both nations to operate a joint fleet to track Russian submarines and protect critical underwater infrastructure in the North Atlantic.
As reported by Anadolu, the announcement coincided with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store's visit to London.
The agreement, named the Lunna House Agreement, is described as the first of its kind in the world.
Under this scheme, the British Royal Navy and the Royal Norwegian Navy will operate as a unit using the interchangeable fleet of British-made Type 26 anti-submarine warfare frigates, as stated by the British government.
The joint fleet will consist of at least eight British and five Norwegian ships, all of which will be supported by autonomous systems.
This agreement comes after the British government reported a 30 percent increase in Russian vessel activity considered to be a threat to British waters over the past two years.
"At this time of profound global instability, as more Russian ships are being detected in our waters, we must work with international partners to protect our national security. This historic agreement with Norway strengthens our ability to protect our borders and the critical infrastructure our nations depend on."
"Through joint navy cooperation in the North Atlantic, we’re boosting security, supporting thousands of UK jobs, and showcasing Britain’s world-class shipbuilding on the global stage," the statement reads.
British Defense Secretary John Healey and Norwegian Defense Minister Tore O. Sandvik are scheduled to sign the agreement at 10 Downing Street before heading to Portsmouth to meet the UK-Norway Maritime Capability Coalition, which supports the training needs and equipment of the Ukrainian Navy.
Under the new arrangement, the joint frigate fleet will patrol the strategic Greenland-Iceland-UK gap to protect underwater cables and pipelines that carry communication, electricity, and gas.
Both navies will share maintenance, technology, and equipment to ensure swift deployment.
The agreement also includes British participation in Norway's development of an aircraft carrier for unmanned mine warfare systems and underwater systems, as well as year-round training for the Royal Marines in Norway.
Furthermore, it also involves the use of Norwegian anti-ship missiles by the British Royal Navy, deeper collaboration on the Sting Ray torpedo, joint warfare exercises, and joint efforts to lead the use of NATO autonomous systems in the northern region.
