TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts increased rainfall in several regions of Indonesia in the coming week. The public is urged to be more vigilant and prepare for extreme weather, such as sudden rain after clear weather.

Deputy of Meteorology at BMKG, Guswanto, stated that the surge in rainfall is influenced by atmospheric dynamics at global, regional, and local levels. Equatorial Rossby waves, Kelvin waves, and the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) continue to strengthen the formation of rain clouds in parts of Sumatra, Java, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua.

"The potential Tropical Cyclone 93W in the east of the Philippines also indirectly impacts the increased rainfall in North Sulawesi and North Maluku," he said in a written statement on Thursday, December 4, 2025.

From December 5 to 7, 2025, heavy rain is predicted in various areas of Sumatra, including Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, Bengkulu, and Lampung. In Java, the prediction covers Banten, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, and East Java. Meanwhile, in West Kalimantan, the areas include North Maluku, Maluku, Papua Highlands, and South Papua.

In the second week of this month, or December 8-11, heavy rain is potentially to occur in North Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, Bangka Belitung Islands, Bengkulu, Lampung, West Java, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, and Papua Highlands. BMKG also detects the possibility of strong winds in North Maluku and North Sulawesi.

BMKG's Director of Public Meteorology, Andri Ramdhani, urges the public and local authorities to prepare simple anticipatory measures. When it rains, he exemplifies, people can avoid risky areas such as under trees or fragile buildings.

"Remain cautious while driving, and ensure that the water flow in the environment is not obstructed. Being cautious without panicking is very helpful," said Andri.
