TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nearly 80 percent of the major tourist destinations across Aceh have been affected by floods and landslides in the region. Some have been wrecked in the disasters, exacerbated by blocked roads access.

This situation was conveyed by the Deputy Secretary of the Regional Leadership Board of the Association of Indonesian Tour and Travel Agencies (ASITA) in Aceh, Afri Yordan, while attending "Promotion of Indonesian Tourist Destinations and Promotion of QR Cross Border Payment Cooperation" in Penang, Malaysia, on Thursday, December 4, 2025.

"The data from relevant agencies show that nearly 80 percent were affected, especially in Takengon, where tourist destinations like the lake and other adventure tourism activities like hiking have been affected by landslides," said Afri Yordan, as quoted by Antara.

According to Afri, several seaside cafes have also been destroyed, while road access to tourist attractions were cut off. "Mountainous areas like Burtelege remain safe," said Afri.

Afri said ASITA, as a tour and travel association, urges the Indonesian government to be more active in assisting the affected communities, including tourism actors in Aceh. "Our efforts to communicate with the government, especially to assist tourist destinations, will continue. We also strive to provide aid to several destinations, for example, in Aceh Besar," he said.

Popular among Malaysian Tourists

Afri said Aceh has become one of the more sought-after tourist destinations by foreign tourists, especially from Malaysia. Malaysian tourists take a liking to religious tourism in Aceh, including stopping by the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque in Banda Aceh. The mosque, built in the 17th century, is in a safe condition and not affected by the floods.

"Based on the data, almost 60 to 70 percent of the tourists are from Malaysia. The rest are mostly from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East," said Afri.

Afri claimed the floods and landslides this year have had a much extensive impact compared to the 2004 tsunami, since the recent disaster affects nearly all the main regions in Aceh.

The Aceh Hydrometeorology Disaster Emergency Command Post reported that as of late Thursday, at least 326 people were killed in the floods and landslides, while 167 others remain missing.
