UGM Dentistry Faculty Breaks Into WURI 2026 Global Top 100

1 hour ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has secured a place among the world's top 100 institutions in the World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI) 2026, standing out among 13,211 innovation programs submitted by 1,927 universities from 96 countries.

The achievement was further highlighted by two first-place global rankings in the Representative Research Project category for its innovations Dental Silkbon and Financial Impact-Driven Technology Transfer, the latter developed through the commercialization of the toothpaste product Propasdent.

FKG UGM Dean Suryono said the recognition reflects years of sustained efforts to strengthen the faculty's global presence and innovation ecosystem.

“I am very happy and proud of the team who worked hard to achieve this. Over the past two to three years, FKG UGM has successfully positioned itself in various global ranking categories,” Suryono said on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

According to him, international recognition depends not only on the quality of innovation but also on an institution's ability to communicate its achievements to a wider audience.

“No matter how significant an achievement is, if it is never introduced to external parties, it will not receive recognition,” he said.

Suryono emphasized that rankings are not the ultimate objective for universities. However, global recognition serves as validation that their research and innovations have meaningful impact beyond Indonesia.

Local Innovations Gain Global Recognition

The latest achievement follows another strong performance by FKG UGM in 2024, when it ranked sixth globally in the Entrepreneurial Spirit category, outperforming several internationally renowned universities.

The two award-winning innovations are rooted in the use of local resources.

Dental Silkbon was developed from silk fibers and can be used as a dental biomaterial, including for stabilizing loose teeth and producing denture materials.

Meanwhile, Propasdent is a toothpaste designed to maintain the natural balance of oral microflora rather than completely sterilizing the mouth, an approach intended to support long-term oral health.

Suryono said the innovations demonstrate the potential of local materials to serve as alternatives to imported dental products that currently dominate the market.

“One of our strengths is transforming local wisdom into innovative products. We have shown that local materials can be developed into competitive products with global potential,” he said.

For FKG UGM, its place among the world's top 100 innovators is more than a ranking milestone. The achievement demonstrates that an Indonesian faculty can compete on the global stage through innovations inspired by community needs and the country's rich local resources.
