TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Venezuela announced on Friday, July 24, that it would withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC), saying the Hague-based court exhibits a "geographical bias" against Latin American and African countries, according to Antara, citing Xinhua.
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Felix Plasencia, in a post on social media platform X, said the country had informed United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres of Venezuela's "firm and irrevocable" decision to end its participation in the Rome Statute and begin the process of definitively withdrawing from the ICC under Article 127.
Plasencia said the court has disproportionately focused its work "to the detriment of the Global South," while perpetuating what he called the persecution of the Venezuelan people and exacerbating inequality.
He stated that the court's actions have demonstrated how the international justice system is used to "deepen inequalities among peoples and disregard their right to self-determination and sovereignty."
According to media reports, the ICC announced in 2021 that it would investigate possible crimes against humanity committed by the Venezuelan government during its crackdown on anti-government demonstrations in 2017.
Venezuela's National Assembly voted in December 2025 to withdraw from its commitments under the Rome Statute.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Plasencia reaffirmed his country's commitment to what he called genuine and equal justice that respects the sovereignty and right of nations to self-determination.
