TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump is optimistic about reaching a trade agreement with China regarding the imposition of import tariffs from the country. “We are going to have a fair deal with China,” said Trump at the White House on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, as quoted from Al Jazeera.
He said he spoke with Chinese leaders. Trump said everything is active when asked by journalists.
Trump's statement emerged as he began to soften his stance towards China regarding import tariffs. The decision on these tariffs has rocked the global market and raised concerns about the economy.
On April 22, 2025, Trump told reporters he did not want to play hardball with Beijing. The 145 percent tariffs imposed on China will eventually be reduced.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the White House is considering cutting high tariffs on China during trade negotiations. The media quoted an unnamed senior White House official saying that import tariffs could be reduced by 50 to 65 percent.
Trump said everybody will be happy, but the U.S. will no longer be a country that is cheated by every country worldwide. He was referring to trade negotiations involving about 100 countries besides China.
The U.S. stock market strengthened on Wednesday due to Trump's assurances that he has no intention of firing Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. Trump also hinted at hopes of easing tensions with China. On Tuesday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the relationship between the U.S. and China will improve.
Trump admitted that he has a very good relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He hopes to reach an agreement soon. As quoted from USA Today, he will set the price if both countries do not agree.
China stated that it opposes protectionist measures like tariffs. However, they are ready to fight to the end if the US continues to attack the country.
At a regular press briefing on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China has made it clear that it is not looking for a war, but they are also not afraid of it.
