Trump, Egypt's El-Sisi Discuss Mediation Efforts to Defuse Red Sea Tensions

20 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Egypt's President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and U.S. President Trump discussed mediation efforts to restore regional calm that would positively impact navigation in the Red Sea and put an end to the economic losses of all parties involved. The discussion was conveyed by the Egyptian presidency on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.

As reported by Arab News, the Houthis, who are aligned with Iran, have carried out more than 100 attacks on shipping through commercial vessels since Israel commenced strikes on Gaza at the end of 2023, citing solidarity with Palestinians.

These attacks have disrupted global trade and prompted the U.S. military to incur high costs to intercept Houthi missiles.

Prior to this, Trump stated on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, that he had discussed with El-Sisi the progress made against the Houthis, as the White House continued its largest military assault on the Yemeni group under the Trump administration since March 15.

Trump declared the U.S. attacks as a response to Houthi disruptions in shipping via the Red Sea. Trump also warned Iran, the main supporter of the Houthis, to immediately cease support for the group.

In a message mistakenly shared with a journalist at The Atlantic magazine last March, a U.S. official revealed plans for war against the Houthis.

One U.S. official quoted in the conversation conveyed by The Atlantic stated that Trump approved the Yemen plan but will soon make clear "to Egypt and Europe what we expect in return."

Egypt's statement did not mention the message or Washington's attack on the Houthis.

Egypt has been affected by Houthi attacks in the Red Sea region since November 2023, forcing ships to avoid the nearby Suez Canal and redirect trade routes around Africa, thus increasing shipping costs.

Last December, El-Sisi stated that the disruptions had cost Egypt around $7 billion in reduced Suez Canal revenues in 2024.
