TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump named Bill Pulte on Tuesday as the acting director of national intelligence (acting DNI).
Pulte is currently the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), which supervises mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The 38-year-old will remain in that role while also taking on the role of acting DNI.
Pulte will take over the position from Tulsi Gabbard, a former Hawaii congresswoman and foreign wars skeptic who resigned from the job after her husband's cancer diagnosis.
Who is Bill Pulte?
The director or national intelligence role is in involved in important security matters as the US continues its war with Iran.
It's unclear what exact experience Pulte brings to the acting DNI role. In a post from Trump on Truth Social, the president cited Pulte's "deep experience managing the most sensitive matters in America, the safety and soundness of the Markets, and over 10 Trillion dollars at Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, a substantial increase from where it was just 12 months ago."
During his role as FHFA director, Pulte has pursued Trump's political enemies, accusing figures such as Democratic Senator Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James of mortgage fraud.
Pulte originally hails from the southern US state of Florida. His grandfather, William J. Pulte, was the founder of the PulteGroup residential home-construction company, one of the largest home building firms in the country.
