TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - On Wednesday, April 2, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a new policy of import tariffs, referred to as reciprocal tariffs, to be implemented on imports entering the U.S. from various countries, including Indonesia.
Trump unveiled the trade rules during a speech in the Rose Garden of the White House. Under the new policy, America will impose a minimum basic tariff of 10 percent on all imports.
Additionally, certain countries will face higher, specific reciprocal tariffs.
In his speech, the president of the Republican Party displayed a list of countries and the amounts of reciprocal tariffs that have been set.
According to the White House's post on Instagram, Indonesia ranks eighth on the list of countries subject to increased U.S. tariffs, with a rate of 32 percent.
Around 60 countries will face reciprocal tariffs, set at half the rate of the tariffs they impose on the U.S. Cambodia will have the highest reciprocal tariff, at 49 percent.
Trump explained that these retaliatory tariffs are being implemented because certain countries were considered to have imposed tariffs on U.S. imports first.
For example, Vietnam will be subject to a reciprocal tariff of 46 percent. According to Trump, the country has had good negotiations with America.
"Great people, they like me, I like them, the problem is they charge us 90%. We’re going to charge them 46% tariff," said Trump in his speech at the White House as quoted by Tempo from the live broadcast by Sky News on April 2, 2025.
Other countries affected by Trump's tariffs include China, which will be subjected to 34 percent, the European Union 20 percent, South Korea 25 percent, Japan 24 percent, Taiwan 32 percent, India 26 percent, and Thailand 36 percent.
Other countries facing reciprocal tariffs include Switzerland at 31 percent, Malaysia at 24 percent, South Africa at 31 percent, Bangladesh at 37 percent, Pakistan at 29 percent, and Sri Lanka at 44 percent. Meanwhile, Israel and the Philippines will each be subject to a 17 percent tariff.
The U.S. will also impose a 17 percent reciprocal tariff on Singapore, the UK, Brazil, Chile, Turkey, Colombia, and Australia.
