Transportation Minister Responds to Ojol Drivers' Demands to Lower Commission to 10 Percent

8 hours ago 2

Indonesia's Minister of Transportation (Menhub) Dudy Purwagandhi spoke out about the demands of the online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver association regarding the reduction of the applicator's cut to 10 percent. As a regulator, Dudy admitted that he could revise the regulation to accommodate these interests.

However, he also wants to accommodate the aspirations of online transportation service companies or applicators. According to him, the aspirations of the ojol applicator companies must be absorbed in order to maintain the sustainability of the online transportation ecosystem.

"Can (the commission cut) be reduced? If I don't think about sustainable balance, it's possible," said Dudy in a meeting forum with applicators in Central Jakarta, Monday, May 19, 2025. According to him, signing a new regulation regarding the reduction of the ojol commission cut to 10 percent is not a difficult matter. "But, it doesn't feel wise if we don't hear everything."

Meanwhile, in yesterday's meeting, Maxim Indonesia Government Relations Specialist Muhammad Rafi Assagaf said that the commission cut to 10 percent would have an impact on the online transportation ecosystem.

The reason is, the commission cut that has been set at 20 percent, one of which is used for innovation and developing technology. "Maxim needs to continue to develop. The goal is partner welfare," he said.

Chief of Public Affairs Grab Indonesia Tirza R Munusamy claimed that Grab always complies with government regulations and has never cut ojol rates by more than 20 percent. He dismissed accusations from the ojol driver association about commission cuts of more than 20 percent.

Tirza also explained that the 20 percent commission was used for technology development. In addition, for safety through insurance financing for driver partners and passengers. Another use is for operational assistance programs for ojol drivers. "For example, oil changes, tire repairs. To ease driver partners' daily work," he said.

Meanwhile, President of Gojek Indonesia Catherine Hindra Sutjahyo said that the commission cut to 10 percent actually has the potential to reduce driver partners' income. The reason is that the 20 percent commission cut that has been running so far, one of which is allocated for promotions. This is the company's strategy to increase consumer transactions.

Therefore, if the commission cut drops to 10 percent, transactions are expected to decrease. "If the number of transactions decreases, we are afraid, based on our trials, that (driver partner income) will decrease more steeply than the increase in income per transaction," he said.

The ojol association will bring demands for a commission cut to 10 percent in a demonstration today, Tuesday, May 20, 2025. Chairperson of the Indonesian Public Transportation Workers Union (SPAI) SPAI Lily Pujiati said this demand was voiced because there were applicators who violated government regulations and cut commissions by more than 20 percent. In fact, she claimed that there were drivers who were subject to cuts of up to 70 percent.

Garda Indonesia General Chairperson Igun Wicaksono said that the demonstration would be attended by thousands of ojol from various regions, such as East Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, Cirebon, Bandung, Cikampek, Karawang, Banten Raya, Palembang, and Lampung. The demonstration will be concentrated at the Merdeka Palace, the Ministry of Transportation, and the Indonesian House of Representatives. According to him, similar actions will also be held simultaneously in other cities.

In addition to protesting, Garda Indonesia and other ojol associations will ensure mass application or offbid. Therefore, any booking through the application on May 20, 2025 will be paralyzed. "We hope that the public will understand this offbid action as a lesson for application providers who violate regulations," he said.
