TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Public Housing and Settlements (PKP) Minister Maruarar Sirait (Ara) announced plans to broaden the eligibility for specialized subsidized housing programs to include informal sector workers.
"I will consider additions for the common people," Ara told reporters at the PKP Ministry in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.
Currently, 13 professions qualify for these programs, including teachers, healthcare workers, military personnel, police officers, migrant workers, laborers, journalists, fishermen, farmers, online motorcycle taxi drivers, creative economy workers, BKBBN field cadres, and housemaids.
Ara intends to add informal workers like meatball sellers and vegetable vendors. "They should have access to banking, even though it is more difficult. They must have justice," he said.
The Gerindra Party politician stated that the existing professional segmentation was the result of thorough discussions and was not intended to discriminate against other professions. According to him, the expansion would be facilitated through the Housing Financing Liquidity Facility (FLPP) program.
"We have thought long and hard. This is only the first 220,000 units (of FLLP), there are another 220,000. Hopefully, it will succeed," Ara said.
However, property observer Anton Sitorus of AS Property Advisory criticized the profession-based approach, arguing that subsidized housing should prioritize those most in need, regardless of occupation. "The program for the people should be universal. There should be no discrimination, regardless of occupation," Sitorus told Tempo on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.
