South Korean Court to Rule on President Yoon's Impeachment Today

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Demonstrators have gathered in the capital of South Korea to await the Constitutional Court's decision on Friday, April 4, 2022. The issue is whether to uphold the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol for declaring a military state of emergency or to restore him to power.

As reported by Antara and Channel NewsAsia, South Korean police have increased vigilance by deploying thousands of personnel ahead of the Constitutional Court's decision on the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Police raised the alert to the second-highest level on Thursday, with plans to deploy around 14,000 people in the capital city of Seoul, according to Yonhap News.

Yoon's attempt on December 3 to overthrow the civilian government plunged the country into political turmoil after he sent armed soldiers to the parliament.

The eight-member panel will decide whether to reinstate Yoon or dismiss him. The National Assembly impeached him on December 14 for his failed military emergency attempt, which plunged the country into its worst political crisis in recent history.

If reinstated, Yoon will immediately resume his duties. In the event of a dismissal, South Korea will have a snap presidential election within 60 days.

According to the law, six judges' approval is required to uphold the impeachment.

Last month, the Constitutional Court rejected the impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, reinstating him to his post.

The "Eulho" alert places half of all available police forces on emergency standby, while the highest alert, "Gapho," will be issued on Friday to deploy all forces to the situation.

The police have completed the "vacuum zone" operation near the Constitutional Court by closing the area with police buses.

According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the South Korean military will also increase its surveillance of North Korea ahead of the decision.

The Court's decision will be delivered from the courtroom and may be broadcast live and attended by the public.

Yoon, according to his legal team, will not attend the long-awaited Court session.

In January, he was arrested and charged with criminal rebellion accusations, but was released from jail last month after the Seoul district court annulled his arrest and allowed him to stand trial without physical detention.
