TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) is aiming to push the national team's FIFA ranking closer to the world's top 100 after Indonesia climbed to 118th in the latest rankings released on Thursday, June 11.
Indonesia rose 10 places following back-to-back victories in FIFA international friendlies against Oman and Mozambique at Jakarta's Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium. The Garuda squad defeated Oman 3-0 on June 5 before securing a 1-0 win over Mozambique on June 9.
PSSI Chair Erick Thohir welcomed the ranking improvement but cautioned against complacency.
"I want to remind everyone that rankings in football do not always guarantee results on the pitch. We must stay grounded and remain focused on upcoming matches so that we can continue moving closer to, and eventually break into, the world's top 100," Erick said in Jakarta on Friday.
Herdman Praises Team's Progress
Indonesia head coach John Herdman said the rise in the FIFA rankings reflects the team's growing maturity and ability to adapt to different styles of play.
"Beyond the additional points and ranking improvement, I am proud of the players for adapting well against two opponents with very different characteristics," Herdman said.
He described the two consecutive home victories over higher-ranked opponents as a significant achievement, adding that Indonesia has become a far more dangerous team for its rivals.
According to Herdman, the players' ability to execute tactical instructions and maintain consistency throughout the matches played a key role in securing the positive results.
Eyes on Top 100 and Regional Tournament
Indonesia's rise to 118th place provides a boost ahead of the 2026 ASEAN Hyundai Cup, commonly known as the AFF Championship, which is scheduled to begin in late July.
Following the regional tournament, the national team will return to FIFA international action in September, with the goal of extending its positive momentum and continuing its climb toward the world's top 100.
The latest ranking marks one of Indonesia's strongest positions in recent years as the team seeks to establish itself among Asia's more competitive football nations.
