TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto conveyed his condolences about the armed group attack on tourists in Kashmir, India, on Wednesday, April 22, 2025. The attack claimed the lives of 26 tourists.
Prabowo expressed his condolences to the Indian Ambassador to Indonesia, Sandeep Chakravorty, at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. Sandeep stated that President Prabowo invited him to the Presidential Palace to discuss the incident.
"I conveyed to him (Prabowo) about what happened, but essentially he expressed concern and condolences for the terrible terrorist attack in India. He said that it was not the Islam practiced in Indonesia," Sandeep stated after the meeting.
Sandeep conveyed what happened in Kashmir and the history of the conflict between India and terrorist groups. He mentioned that as the leader of the country with the world's largest Muslim population, Prabowo was shocked by the attack. Simply because of religion, tourists were killed. Sandeep also mentioned that Prabowo will speak directly with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to offer mediation aid.
"He will speak to my Prime Minister," he said.
Earlier, an armed group shot at dozens of tourists in the Indian-administered Kashmir region on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. At least 26 people were killed, according to Indian police, as cited by Al Jazeera.
The attack occurred when a group of tourists was visiting the grasslands of Baisaran, about 5 km from the resort town of Pahalgam in the disputed region.
“This attack is much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years,” wrote Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the top elected official in the region, on social media.
Indian police stated that at least 26 people were killed. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, the police blame the armed group that opposes Indian authority. Security forces are pursuing the attackers. The injured victims have been taken to hospitals.
Most of the tourists killed were Indian nationals. A tour guide in Pahalgam stated that he approached the scene after hearing gunfire. He helped transport some injured victims by riding a horse. Waheed, a tour guide, said he saw several men lying lifeless on the ground. Another witness stated that the attackers did not target female tourists.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shortened his two-day visit to Saudi Arabia and returned to the capital on Wednesday morning. He condemned the attack as a “heinous act” and promised that the attackers “will be brought to justice."
"Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable and it will get even stronger," Modi said in a post on X.
On April 23, 2025, a few days after the attack, India reduced its ties with Pakistan. Indian Foreign Minister Vikram Misri stated that the land border between the two countries will be closed. The Indian government will also suspend the water sharing agreement that allows the division of the Indus River system between the two countries.
