TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning of potential high waves in several maritime regions of Indonesia from August 14 to 17, 2025.
BMKG forecaster Furqon Alfahmi stated that the wind moves from southeast to southwest in northern parts of Indonesia, with speeds ranging from 6 to 25 knots, while in the southern parts, winds move southeast at 8 to 25 knots.
"The strongest winds were observed in the Indian Ocean south of Banten to Central Java, the North Natuna Sea, and the Arafura Sea," he said in a written statement on Thursday, August 14th, 2025.
These conditions are causing high waves, from 1.25-2.5 meters, that are likely to occur in the northern Malacca Strait, Indian Ocean west of Nias Islands, the southern part of Karimata Strait, the central part of Java Sea, Bali Sea, the southern part of Makassar Strait, the central part of Sulawesi Sea, the Maluku Sea, the Flores Sea, the western part of Arafura Sea, the eastern part of Arafura Sea, Pacific Ocean north of Maluku and West Papua, Indian Ocean west of Aceh and Mentawai Islands.

Furqon mentioned that the potential for high waves in several regions could pose risks to marine safety. Therefore, BMKG urges coastal communities to remain vigilant, especially for fishers who use fishing vessels, to be wary of wind speeds exceeding 15 knots and wave heights above 1.25 meters.
Barge ships are asked to avoid wind speeds exceeding 16 knots and high waves above 1.5 meters, and ferries are advised to be cautious of wind speeds exceeding 21 knots and high waves above 2.5 meters.
On large vessels such as cargo ships and cruises, BMKG advises to avoid wind speeds exceeding 27 knots and high waves above 4.0 meters. "We urge coastal communities to remain vigilant," he said.
