TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is targeting a major renovation of Gambir Railway Station in Central Jakarta. Prabowo has instructed Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi and state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) President Director Bobby Rasyidin to begin immediate discussions on the plan.
Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya revealed that the President issued these directives during a meeting with Dudy and Bobby at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta last Thursday. "Gambir Station will be renovated into a more modern, strategic transportation hub," Teddy said in a statement quoted on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
According to Teddy, the renovation of the station, located in the iconic National Monument (Monas) area, is slated for completion within two years. Gambir Station is expected to offer seamless multimodal integration, including direct links with the commuter line (KRL) network.
Beyond the Gambir facelift, Prabowo also pressed the Transportation Ministry and PT KAI to urgently address safety issues at railway crossings. "The safety of train passengers and road users remains a top priority," Teddy emphasized.
Currently, 172 railway crossings have been closed, 490 are undergoing safety adjustments, and barriers have been installed at 1,148 crossings. The Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) area remains the primary focus, accounting for the highest volume of safety interventions.
President Prabowo's directives, Teddy added, are central to the administration's broader push to build a more modern, connected, and highly secure public transit network. "By developing strategic infrastructure and accelerating the securing of vulnerable points, the government aims to provide safer, more comfortable transport services that can sustain future economic growth and public mobility," he said.
In addition, the Ministry of Transportation reported on the expansion of the national railway network. According to Dudy, there are currently around 6,927 kilometers of active railway lines running across Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Papua. The government aims to expand the network to 10,524 kilometers of railway lines, including in urban areas.
