TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto received the UK Government International Education Champion, Sir Steve Smith, and the UK Ambassador to Indonesia, Dominic Jermey, at his residence in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java, on Friday, May 30, 2025.
Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya said the meeting discussed several steps to enhance cooperation between the two countries, including the main focus, cooperation between Indonesian and British universities.
"Several top universities in the United Kingdom are interested in establishing their campuses in Indonesia," he said in an official statement on Friday, May 30, 2025.
Teddy mentioned that Prabowo also pushed for more students from Indonesia gaining access to leading universities in the UK. "Whether it's directly in the UK or at British campuses in Indonesia," he said.
Prabowo's aide stated that talks about research collaboration between professors and researchers from both countries were also present in the meeting. The research focus will be directed towards strategic national issues, especially the topic of downstreaming as outlined in Prabowo's Asta Cita national development agenda.
"Boosting collaboration between Indonesian researchers or professors and their British counterparts, especially in regard to the downstreaming of 28 Indonesian priority natural resources under Asta Cita," he said.
Also present at the meeting were Helen Bailey from Queen Mary University of London, Funmi Olonisakin from King's College London, Tariq Ali from the University of Liverpool, and the British Council Country Director for Indonesia, Summer Xia.
