TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Metropolitan Police have arrested a 45-year-old woman identified as DM, a resident of Ciamis Regency, West Java, on suspicion of spreading false information and hoaxes via social media. DM allegedly uploaded content containing baseless claims regarding calls for demonstrations ahead of the Indonesian Independence Day on August 17, 2026.

Jakarta Metro Police Cyber Investigation Director, Senior Commissioner Bagoes Wibisono, stated that the case was uncovered during routine cyber patrol. "During our cyber patrol, officers detected content whose authenticity needed to be verified," he said in a written statement on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.

The police personnel followed up on the initial discovery by carrying out digital analysis and tracking electronic footprints. "Following further investigation, we determined that the information lacked factual basis and carried the potential to incite public unrest," he noted.

The investigation led to DM's residence in Ciamis Regency, West Java. The Jakarta Metro Police Cyber Investigation Directorate subsequently coordinated with the Ciamis Police to arrest DM at her home.

During the initial questioning, DM admitted to owning the account in question. Investigators also seized evidence comprising a smartphone, a TikTok account, a SIM card, and an email address suspected of being utilized to commit the offense.

For her actions, DM was charged under Article 48 paragraph (1) in conjunction with Article 32 paragraph (1), alongside Article 51 paragraph (1) in conjunction with Article 35 of Law Number 11 of 2008 concerning Electronic Information and Transactions, as well as Article 264 of Law Number 1 of 2023 under the new Criminal Code (KUHP).

Head of Public Relations at the Jakarta Metro Police, Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto, confirmed that both the suspect and the confiscated evidence have been transferred to the Cyber Investigation Directorate headquarters for further legal processing.

Budi also urged members of the public to exercise caution when navigating social media platforms. "Make sure all information is verified before sharing it, and don't be easily provoked by content whose veracity is uncertain," he advised.
