TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Apple is reportedly planning its first mass layoffs under John Ternus as its new CEO.
As reported by Phone Arena on Sunday, Apple is not a company known for mass layoffs, but this move appears to be aimed at improving the company's health.
The news of the first layoffs under the new CEO was reported by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter.
According to unnamed internal sources, the layoffs target workers working on Apple Fitness+.
The Apple Fitness+ service itself is not a significant revenue generator for the company. It could be argued that after years of existence, the service has failed to grow as much as other digital and physical solutions offered by Apple.
Last year, Gurman reported that the Cupertino-based company was indeed trying to tighten up the management of Apple Fitness+.
In addition to trying to improve the service with new features such as AI-generated voiceover support for workout videos, layoffs appear inevitable.
Gurman believes Apple will not eliminate the service entirely to avoid backlash. However, the company may be reducing costs for the development of the service in the near future.
This wave of layoffs is the first under the leadership of new CEO John Ternus.
However, that doesn't mean layoffs will become more common at the company with the Apple logo.
This is because layoffs in less profitable divisions were also implemented under former CEO Tim Cook, specifically the Apple Vision Pro division.
Therefore, these layoffs at Apple Fitness+ appear to be simply a continuation of previously decided corporate actions.
