TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - OpenAI is reportedly developing its own social network similar to social media X, formerly known as Twitter. Quoting The Verge on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, the company is working on a prototype that focuses on ChatGPT image creation features, including social content.
OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman is said to be seeking private input from external parties regarding this project. However, the direction of the project remains unclear. The social media platform could be launched as a separate application, or it could potentially be integrated into ChatGPT. Moreover, OpenAI's chatbot recently set a record as the most downloaded application in the world.
The launch of a new social network within the ChatGPT ecosystem is predicted to strengthen Altman's competition with Elon Musk, who acquired Twitter in October 2022 and later renamed it X.
Last February, Musk suddenly made an offer to buy OpenAI for US$ 97.4 billion. Altman responded sarcastically, stating, "No, thank you." The OpenAI boss even counter-offered to buy Twitter for a similar price.
Entering the social media realm is also expected to directly pit OpenAI against Meta, which is preparing its own AI assistant. Meta's intelligent features will also include social content.
Developing a social application can also help OpenAI access unique real-time data-a component utilized by X and Meta to train their AI models. Elon Musk uses it to train Grok, while Meta uses it for the Llama model.
One of the concepts behind OpenAI's social media prototype is to help users distribute better content. This goal is associated with the viral phenomenon of X's tweets utilizing Grok's capabilities. X users are said to be able to ask AI Grok to tweet something funny that will then attract the attention of netizens.
OpenAI management has not yet officially commented on the rumor of developing a ChatGPT-based social media platform. However, the artificial intelligence technology developer is known to be striving to enhance the level of its services.
