TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia and Russia have explored a wide range of cooperation opportunities, spanning oil and gas, LNG, LPG, renewable energy, and the peaceful use of nuclear power during the 14th Indonesia-Russia Joint Commission Meeting (SKB).
"Energy sector cooperation with Russia has already yielded various investment commitments in upstream oil and gas, oil refineries, and renewable electricity generation, including plans for small modular nuclear power plants," said Indonesian Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Yuliot in an official statement confirmed by Antara in Jakarta on Thursday.
The 14th Indonesia-Russia Joint Commission on Trade, Economic, and Technical Cooperation was held in Kazan, Russia, with the energy and mineral resources sector serving as a cornerstone of the bilateral talks.
Yuliot highlighted several key developments in the energy partnership, including follow-up discussions on oil procurement plans, the development of oil and gas fields, the Tuban Grass Root Refinery (GRR) project, and collaboration on peaceful nuclear technology.
During the plenary session, the Deputy Minister emphasized the critical need to bolster investment and technological exchange between the two nations to safeguard Indonesia's national energy security and accelerate its clean energy transition.
"This aligns with the national priority of strengthening energy security, both for fuel oil and electricity," Yuliot said.
On the occasion, Yuliot emphasized the Indonesian government's commitment to promoting clean energy and increasing national power generation capacity, as outlined in the 2025–2034 General Plan for Electricity Supply (RUPTL).
"In the 2025–2034 RUPTL, an additional 70 GW of generating capacity is set, with a target of 40 GW coming from new and renewable energy, or 62 percent of the total additional capacity. For nuclear power plants, the construction target is two units with a total capacity of 500 MW," Yuliot added.
The 14th Joint Ministerial Meeting resulted in "Agreed Minutes" containing follow-up actions for cooperation in the energy and mineral resources sectors. The meeting also addressed mineral metallurgy downstreaming and the standardization of the oil, gas, and energy industries.
The Indonesia–Russia Joint Ministerial Meeting (SKB) is an official bilateral mechanism between the governments of Indonesia and the Russian Federation to evaluate cooperation across various strategic sectors.
The involvement of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in this forum is part of an effort to strengthen Indonesia's energy diplomacy, support national energy security, and enhance technology and investment cooperation in the mineral resources sector.
