TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Myanmar junta on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, extended the ceasefire declared after last month's devastating earthquake to April 30.
As reported by Channel News Asia, the move came after aid groups and international mediators called for an extension to ease relief efforts.
The military junta, which seized power in a 2021 coup and sparked a civil war, said it would cease attacking its various armed opponents after the 7.7-magnitude quake that has killed more than 3,700 people.
Conflict monitors and residents in the battle zone said fighting continued on both sides during the 20-day truce. The ceasefire, declared to help aid deliveries in Myanmar's central region, was due to expire at midnight Wednesday.
The ceasefire was extended until April 30, “aiming to continue the rebuilding and rehabilitation process with momentum,” the junta's information team said in a statement.
However, the military said it would not hesitate to retaliate if other armed groups launched attacks—as it had said when announcing the ceasefire.
The March 28 earthquake has left more than 60,000 Myanmar citizens living in tents, and pushed two million people into “critical need for assistance and protection,” according to the United Nations.
Despite continued fighting, humanitarian groups and regional powers have called for the pause in hostilities to be extended as relief efforts continue into a fourth week.
Last Thursday, Myanmar junta chief Min Aung Hlaing flew to Bangkok to meet with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for talks with the ASEAN chair.
Anwar, whose country currently holds the rotating chair of ASEAN, said that he had also spoken with Myanmar's opposition “National Unity Government” which promised a similar ceasefire after the earthquake.
