Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake Hits Myanmar: 12 Urgent Needs Identified

1 day ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake of 7.7 and 6.4 magnitude struck Myanmar on Friday, March 28, 2025. Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) as of April 1, 2025, stated that the local State Administration Council (SAC) reported 2,056 deaths and 3,900 injuries.

Meanwhile, the mass media reported at least 3,034 deaths, 3,517 injuries, and 498 still missing. The Indonesian government has sent humanitarian aid to the earthquake victims in Myanmar. The total aid provided by Indonesia is US$1.2 million.

The former Director of Infectious Diseases of the WHO Southeast Asia, Prof. Tjandra Yoga Aditama, stated that within 24 hours after the earthquake, the WHO Southeast Asia had sent nearly 3 tons of health supplies to the main affected areas in the cities of Nay Pyi Taw and Mandalay. This includes medical equipment, trauma kits, and health tents.

So far, the WHO has also mobilized a support fund of US$5 million, while about US$8 million is needed in the next 30 days.

In his statement on Thursday, April 3, 2025, Tjandra said the WHO also routinely publishes situation reports so that we can follow the developments over time. So far, the situation report has been published three times, on March 29-30 and April 1. This once again shows the real work of the WHO Southeast Asia in the field, to support WHO member countries.

The WHO has identified 12 critical needs that Myanmar currently requires, which can also be used as a reference for assisting. The 12 needs are mass casualty management, trauma care and surgery, blood transfusion equipment, body bags, anesthesia equipment, essential medicines, tents, personal protective equipment (PPE), health facility damage assessment, access to clean water and sanitation, disease outbreak surveillance and prevention and response, as well as mental and psychosocial support.
