TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Commuter line operator KAI Commuter will soon operate eight new electric trainsets (KRL), comprising 96 train cars, to replace older trains that have reached their conservation or operational cessation phase due to technical age.
Leza Arlan, KAI Commuter's Public Relations Manager, stated that KAI Commuter is progressively acquiring new KRL facilities from state-owned train manufacturer PT INKA and China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC). KAI Commuter has already received the sixth and seventh train sets from CRRC on Friday, May 23, 2025.
"To date, KAI Commuter has procured eight new KRL facilities. Each set consists of 12 train sets, totaling 96 train cars," Leza explained in Jakarta on Saturday.
The delivery of new KRL facilities for Commuter Line services in the Jabodetabek or Greater Jakarta area has been a gradual process, occurring between January 30, 2025, and May 22, 2025. Currently, eight train sets have arrived, with seven from CRRC and one from INKA.
Leza further added that KAI Commuter has ordered an additional 27 new train cars, or a total of 324 train units, which will be sourced from both domestic producer PT INKA and foreign manufacturers.
All new KRL facilities will undergo parameter and dynamic testing in accordance with the Transportation Ministerial Regulation No. 49 of 2023, which outlines the standards, testing procedures, and certification for conventional speed self-propelled railway vehicles. This testing will be conducted by the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) of the Ministry of Transportation.
KAI Commuter anticipates that these new KRL facilities will be operational for user services soon, following the completion of safety and operational feasibility testing.
The procurement of these new KRL facilities is part of KAI Commuter's efforts to optimize services for the community, particularly Commuter Line users in the Greater Jakarta area. "Furthermore, this procurement process also underscores KAI Commuter's commitment to ensuring the safety and comfort of Commuter Line users," Leza concluded.
