TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday dismissed rumors suggesting he would step down from his post amid the escalating military conflict with the United States.
"If I were going to resign, I would announce it publicly. I will not resign, and I will continue the struggle," Pezeshkian said in an address broadcast by the IRNA news agency.
The statement served to refute reports published by Iranian opposition outlets claiming Pezeshkian had repeatedly tendered his resignation to Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
He also dismissed reports of friction with Khamenei and the Iranian armed forces, asserting that they operate in complete alignment. "Everyone knows that if any disagreement arises, the armed forces would stand with Khamenei," Pezeshkian stated.
Tensions erupted into open conflict in February when the US and Israel launched a joint strike on Iran. Tehran retaliated with missile and drone strikes targeting Gulf states housing US military installations.
While the US and Iran agreed to a ceasefire in April, subsequently signing a peace memorandum brokered by Pakistan in June to suspend hostilities and lay the groundwork for a broader accord, the truce fractured.
The agreement fell apart last month after the US and Iran engaged in nearly two weeks of reciprocal strikes. US President Donald Trump subsequently halted airstrikes without warning amid emerging reports of diplomatic efforts to defuse the conflict.
