TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iran stated that they will prevent any attempt of warships passing through the Strait of Hormuz with a “firm and decisive response,” according to a statement from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy Command.
“Any attempt by military vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz will be dealt with severely. The IRGC Navy has full authority to manage the Strait of Hormuz intelligently,” the IRGC’s Navy Command says, according to state broadcaster IRIB, as quoted by Iran's Fars news agency, adding passage of the strait will only be “granted to civilian vessels under specific conditions.”
The IRGC also denied reports that a US warship had reportedly passed through the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier on Saturday (April 11), the Fars news agency reported that the Iranian Armed Forces were monitoring the position of a US Navy destroyer departing from the port of Fujairah for the Strait of Hormuz. All of the ship's activities were reported to the Iranian delegation in Islamabad, which then relayed the information to the US through a Pakistani intermediary.
According to Fars, Iran had issued a warning to the destroyer and also directly informed the Pakistani intermediary that it would be targeted for attack within 30 minutes if it continued its journey, which could jeopardize the Iran-US negotiations.
On Saturday, Iran and the United States began talks in Islamabad after US President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire agreement with Tehran on the evening of April 8.
As of this writing, the talks have lasted more than eight hours. The third round of negotiations is still underway. As reported by Iranian state television, one of the main points of contention between the Iranian and US delegations is the Strait of Hormuz.
The Iranian delegation is led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, National Security Council Chairman Ali Akbar Ahmadian, and Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati.
Meanwhile, the US delegation is led by Vice President J.D. Vance and includes President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and the president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
