Iran Rejects Washington's 48-Hour Ceasefire Proposal, Report Says

6 hours ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Iran has formally rejected the US' 48-hour ceasefire proposal, according to Al Jazeera, cited by NDTV

The United States proposed the deal on April 2 through a third country, as reported by the semi-official news agency Fars on Friday, citing sources familiar with the information.

“The US, on April 2, proposed a 48-hour ceasefire through one of the friendly countries,” the source told Fars as cited by Anadolu.

The proposal came after “escalating tensions and challenges faced by US forces in the region,” added the source.

According to the news agency, Iran did not respond in writing but instead responded "on the ground" by continuing heavy attacks.

The source also stated that “US diplomatic efforts to halt the fighting have intensified, particularly after a reported strike on a US military depot on Bubiyan Island in Kuwait.”

The rejection highlights Tehran's sustained hardening position amid the current regional situation.

The diplomatic efforts were reportedly conveyed on Wednesday through an intermediary nation. Al Jazeera noted that the specific country acting as the intermediary "has not been named" in the original source report, which cited sources on backchannel communication.

The failure of this diplomatic overture coincides with a sharp rise in military hostilities. American forces have successfully rescued a crew member from a crashed US fighter jet in Iran, according to CNN, citing three sources familiar with the situation.

The rescued individual was reported to be alive and has been placed "in US custody and receiving medical treatment," as confirmed by two sources. However, while one person has been found, the fate of the second crew member remains uncertain.

CNN reported that "search and rescue operations were ongoing" following the plane crash in Iran. Technical details provided by US sources confirmed that the crashed aircraft was an "F-15E Strike Eagle" fighter jet.

On February 28, the US and Israel launched an airstrike on Iran, which has killed more than 1,340 people to date, including the then Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, along with Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military assets, resulting in casualties and infrastructure damage, as well as disrupting global markets and air travel.
