Iran Grants Safe Passage to Malaysian Vessel in Strait of Hormuz

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that one of seven Malaysia-owned commercial vessels has been allowed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is pleased to confirm that one of the seven (7) Malaysian-owned commercial vessels previously stranded in the Strait of Hormuz due to the evolving regional situation has been granted safe passage and is currently proceeding to its final destination," the ministry wrote in a statement from Kuala Lumpur, as quoted from Antara.

The ministry said Malaysia achieved this positive outcome following high-level diplomatic engagements, including ones between Malaysian leaders and Iran.

The high-level diplomacy included constructive phone calls on March 26, 2026, between Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Additionally, Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan had previously engaged in dialogue with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on March 24, 2026.

The ministry stated that Malaysia remains strongly committed to the principles of "freedom of navigation, safety and security of maritime passage, in accordance with international law."

Malaysia also reiterated the importance of continued dialogue and diplomatic engagement in addressing regional challenges and maintaining peace and stability.
