Iran Fears US Could Use Ceasefire to Rebuild Military Strength

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi said on Friday that Iran has expressed concern that the United States will exploit the ceasefire period to strengthen its arsenal.

"We do not need a ceasefire that would allow the enemy to re-arm itself and carry out aggression again," the diplomat was quoted as saying by the Iranian government's information portal, cited Antara.

He emphasized that Tehran supports diplomacy and dialogue, but not if it opens the door to new attacks on Iranian territory. Takht-Ravanchi added that Iran's proposed 10-point plan would serve as the foundation for peace negotiations.

He claims that the actions of the Iranian Armed Forces during the conflict forced the U.S. and Israel to reevaluate their "strategic vision" of Tehran.

Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on July 4 that he had agreed to a two-week bilateral ceasefire with Iran and confirmed that Iran had agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The Supreme National Security Council of Iran later announced that Tehran would begin talks with the U.S. on Friday in Islamabad, Pakistan.

On Wednesday, April 8, Israeli fighter jets and artillery attacked dozens of settlements in southern Lebanon, including the key city of Tyre. Trump stated that stopping Israeli attacks on Lebanon was not part of the deal with Iran because of the Hezbollah group.

However, Iran considers this a violation of the ceasefire that was agreed upon by the U.S. and Iran.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that negotiations to end the conflict between the U.S. and Iran depend on a commitment to ceasefire obligations on all fronts.
