TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chairperson of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), Erick Thohir, warmly welcomed the maximum points achieved by the Indonesian U-17 national team in the first two matches of the U-17 Asian Cup 2025. Under the guidance of Nova Arianto, the squad recorded their second victory by defeating Yemen with a score of 4-1 on Monday, April 7, 2025, after winning 1-0 against South Korea last Friday.
Erick congratulated the Indonesian U-17 national team. "The victory against Yemen in the second match of the U-17 Asia Cup has ensured Indonesia U-17's place in the top 8 and also secured a spot in the 2025 U-17 World Cup in Qatar," he said, as quoted in a statement released by the PSSI media team on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
He reminded the Young Garuda squad that they still have to continue their struggle. "But remember, the battle is not over. The players and coaching staff must refocus on the next U-17 Asia Cup match to achieve the best results in the 2025 U-17 Asia Cup," added Erick.
Indonesia's best achievement in the U-17 Asian Cup was finishing in fourth place, which occurred once in the 1990 edition. Judging by the performances of Evandra Florasta and his teammates in the two group matches this time, there is hope for better results in this 20th edition.
In the match against Yemen, Indonesia U-17 took a two-goal lead in the first half through Zahaby Gholy and Fadly Aberto. At the beginning of the second half, Dafa Al Gasemi conceded a penalty from Mohammed Wahib Al-Garash, before Evandra Florasta scored from the penalty spot and added another goal in the final minutes of normal time.
Prior to that, Evandra also scored against South Korea, securing a 1-0 victory. At that time, he initially failed to convert a penalty kick but quickly responded by kicking the ball into the net after the goalkeeper's save.
The second victory puts Indonesia U-17 at the top of Group C's temporary standings with six points, ahead of Yemen with three points. Meanwhile, South Korea and Afghanistan, both of whom lost in the first match, are still competing.
Erick urged the players and coaching staff to maintain their physical and mental condition at a high intensity for the best results, as this tournament still has many challenging matches and opponents ahead.
At the same time, Erick expressed his gratitude to all national team officials, coach Nova Arianto, the players and their parents, supporters, the PSSI organization throughout Indonesia, as well as the government under President Prabowo Subianto for their incredible support.
The next match for the Indonesian U-17 national team will be against Afghanistan in the final Group C match on Thursday, April 10, 2025.
