TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) is currently drafting a regulation for the re-registration of social media accounts, requiring users to provide their phone numbers as a mandatory registration requirement. Komdigi Minister Meutya Hafid stated that this requirement is currently not mandatory, and she is seeking input from the House of Representatives' Commission I.
"This is what we are discussing in public consultations, how people, when they enter social media, are required to input their phone numbers," Meutya said during a meeting at the DPR in Jakarta on Monday, May 18, 2026.
According to the Golkar Party politician, registering social media accounts with a phone number can strengthen users' identities. Meutya believes that this step can encourage social media users to be accountable for the content they post.
"So their identity is clear, so they become accountable for the writings they publish," Meutya said.
In addition, Komdigi is strengthening the verified digital identity system through the Electronic Certification Authority (PSRE). Meutya stated that these government actions are intended to strengthen national resilience in the digital space.
Meutya also presented Komdigi's steps to tighten surveillance of global digital platforms, such as temporarily shutting down the Grok feature of Platform X after receiving numerous complaints about deepfake pornographic content.
Komdigi has also summoned Meta and Google regarding compliance with child protection regulations in the digital space as stipulated in Government Regulation Number 17 of 2025 or PP TUNAS. Meutya then stated that the government is not only regulating social media, but also educating the public through Komdigi's counselors.
"We believe that safeguarding national resilience in social media does not mean that all activities should be on social media, but physical meetings with the community for discussions, socialization, and education are also crucial roles," she said.
