TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar conveyed his condolences on the passing of Pope Francis. The leader of the Catholic community reportedly passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025.
"I offer my deepest condolences. Let us pray that His Holiness finds a worthy place at His side, according to the virtues he practiced," Nasaruddin said in a video statement received by Tempo on Monday, April 21, 2025.
The Grand Imam of Istiqlal Mosque said that Pope Francis' services cannot be forgotten, including Pope Francis' friendship with Indonesia.
"Just now (Pope Francis) visited Indonesia, including visiting Istiqlal Mosque and making a joint statement that had a global impact," he said.
Nasaruddin hopes that the Catholic community left by Pope Francis can face this trial. He also hopes that the collaboration between Indonesia and the Vatican will continue, along with all religious communities.
"May the legacy initiated by Pope Francis be followed through as agreed," Nasaruddin said.
The Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, announced that Pope Francis passed away on April 21, 2025, at 07:35 Vatican time.
The man born with the name Jose Mario Bergoglio passed away one day after Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025. During the Easter moment, the Pope conveyed several messages through an aide, while the man from Argentina briefly appeared on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica. Through the message, the Pope urged a ceasefire in Gaza.
The Pope did not celebrate Easter Mass at the Vatican because doctors advised him to limit his activities. However, he still appeared at the end of the event to give the Urbi et Orbi blessing, a blessing for the city and the world, and conveyed a message of peace.
The Pope was hospitalized in February 2025 due to bronchitis that developed into double pneumonia. He had previously suffered from pleurisy in his youth, and part of his lungs had been removed. Doctors had asked Francis to rest for two months at his residence in the Vatican for recovery.
