TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka offered his condolences following the passing of Pope Francis, the supreme leader of the Catholic Church and Head of State of the Vatican, on Monday, April 21, 2025.
Gibran shared his message of sympathy via his Instagram account, @gibran_rakabuming, on Monday afternoon, describing the Pope as a gentle, compassionate, and unwavering spiritual leader who consistently championed human values.
"On behalf of myself and Indonesia, I express deep condolences for the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. His legacy in building interfaith bridges, caring for the earth, and advocating for the oppressed will continue to live on in the hearts of humanity. Our prayers and sympathy from us, the Indonesian nation. May peace be with him, and may his love continue to be a guiding light for the world," wrote Gibran.
Pope Francis passed away today at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, Vatican. At 09:45 AM, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced the passing of the 88-year-old Pope Francis.
"Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church," said Cardinal Farrell as quoted from the Vatican's website on Monday, April 21, 2025.
Pope Francis passed away shortly after returning from the hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for bronchitis at the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital since Friday, February 14, 2025.
His condition deteriorated over time, and on Tuesday, February 18, doctors diagnosed him with bilateral pneumonia. After spending 38 days under medical care, he was discharged and returned to the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta to continue his recovery.
According to Archbishop Diego Ravelli, the Master of Apostolic Ceremonies, Pope Francis had requested a simple funeral.
Prior to his passing, on Sunday, April 20, 2025, Pope Francis delivered an Easter message through an aide, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. He briefly appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica. In the message, he described the situation in Gaza as “dramatic and distressing,” urged Hamas to release all remaining hostages, and condemned the global surge in antisemitism.
"I express my closeness to the suffering of the people of Israel and Palestine," he said, as quoted from Channel News Asia. "I urge all parties in conflict to stop the war, free the hostages, and help the starving people for a peaceful future."
