TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto received South Korea’s highest state honor, the Grand Order of Mugunghwa, during a friendship event at the Garden of Sangchungjae in the presidential compound in Seoul on Wednesday, April 1.
According to a statement from the Presidential Secretariat in Jakarta, the award was presented directly by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung as part of Prabowo’s state visit to the country.
The Grand Order of Mugunghwa is South Korea’s highest national decoration. It is traditionally awarded to the South Korean president and spouse, as well as to current or former heads of state from friendly nations and their spouses, in recognition of outstanding service supporting the development and security of the Republic of Korea.
The South Korean government said the honor recognized Prabowo’s role in strengthening bilateral ties between Indonesia and South Korea, including elevating relations to a Special Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during his visit.
South Korean media and official coverage of the summit said the two countries agreed to upgrade the partnership and expand cooperation in trade, investment, energy, defense, and other strategic sectors.
The decoration presented to Prabowo included several ceremonial insignia, including a ribbon badge, collar, star, and lapel pin, all made from precious metals and adorned with gemstones, according to the Presidential Secretariat.
First awarded in 1949, the Grand Order of Mugunghwa has been conferred on more than 100 global figures, both domestic and foreign, according to the Indonesian statement. The honor is widely regarded as one of South Korea’s most prestigious diplomatic symbols.
The award underscores the deepening friendship and expanding strategic cooperation between Indonesia and South Korea, as both countries seek closer collaboration in key sectors ranging from energy and critical minerals to defense and technology.
