Indonesia: Prabowo's Offer to Mediate US-Iran Conflict Remains Open

5 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's offer to help mediate between the United States and Iran remains on the table amid renewed tensions between the two countries, Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir said on Thursday.

Speaking after a meeting with the House of Representatives' Commission I at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta, Arrmanatha said any mediation effort would require the consent of all parties involved.

“The offer remains open, but of course it would require agreement from all sides,” he said.

Arrmanatha said the proposal reflects President Prabowo Subianto's willingness to contribute to efforts aimed at reducing tensions and supporting a peaceful resolution to the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

According to the deputy foreign minister, Prabowo remains prepared to provide Indonesia's good offices in support of diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.

He added that Indonesia continues to advocate dialogue and diplomacy as part of its longstanding foreign policy approach.

Arrmanatha also expressed concern over the renewed exchange of attacks between the United States and Iran, saying the escalation has created fresh tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.

He noted that a prolonged conflict would have consequences not only for the countries directly involved but also for the wider international community.

Indonesia has therefore renewed its call for all parties to pursue a ceasefire and return to negotiations, he said.

Prabowo first offered to facilitate dialogue shortly after hostilities between the United States, Israel, and Iran erupted on February 28. At the time, Indonesia's Foreign Ministry said the president was prepared to help mediate efforts to restore stability in the region.

The ministry said in a statement on February 28 that Prabowo was willing to travel to Tehran as part of a potential mediation initiative.

The latest comments came after clashes between Iranian and U.S. forces reportedly resumed early Thursday in the waters of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman following a period of ceasefire and prolonged negotiations.

Meanwhile, Khatam al-Anbiya Headquarters announced the full closure of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping amid the escalating tensions, according to a report by Xinhua News Agency.
