Indonesia, France to Expand Cooperation in Land, Maritime, and Air Transport

1 week ago 5

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi welcomed French Minister of Foreign Trade Delegation Laurent Saint-Martin during a visit to his office on Wednesday, April 9, 2025. The two discussed potential cooperation across land, sea, and air transportation sectors.

Beyond advancing transportation technology, Minister Dudy highlighted human resource development as a key area of collaboration.

He emphasized that knowledge transfer from France could be facilitated through training programs, competency-based education, and vocational studies at polytechnics and academies under the Ministry of Transportation.

“Indonesia is committed to strengthening its transportation partnership with France. This discussion is intended to ensure the collaboration delivers real benefits for both countries,” Dudy said in a written statement received by Tempo.

As for the discussion on collaboration in the land transportation sector, it is related to the improvement of infrastructure and public transportation accessibility in urban areas throughout Indonesia.

Furthermore, the financing of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects in Medan and Bandung was also discussed.

In the maritime transportation sector, Dudy continued, the discussed collaboration was the renewal of the Certificate of Recognition (COR) MoU. Currently, the MoU is in category 1, so only Indonesia recognizes French sailor certificates.

Dudy hopes that the MoU will be categorized as 3 so that Indonesia and France mutually recognize each other's certifications.

"By recognizing both countries' certifications, it will boost employment opportunities, strengthen maritime cooperation, increase economic benefits for both countries, and support the efficiency and safety of global shipping operations," said Dudy.

As for the aviation sector, Dudy mentioned that the focus of the discussion was on extending the Technical Cooperation Agreement and modernizing flight navigation equipment for the airspace in the western region of Indonesia.

"I encourage the French aviation industry to continue collaborating with Indonesia and actively participate in future procurement processes. The procurement process is entirely the responsibility of AirNav Indonesia and will be carried out in accordance with applicable laws and regulations," he said.

As for the railway sector, the potential collaboration discussed included the development projects for the Bandung railway, the electrification of Padalarang-Cicalengka, and the acceleration of the Bandung LRT plan.

"I hope this discussion will yield results. We are fully committed and always open to strengthening transportation collaboration within the framework of applicable laws and regulations," he said.
