TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is auditing 80 Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) across the country whose buildings are considered at risk of structural failure.
The move follows the recent collapse of the Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School in Sidoarjo, East Java, in late September 2025.
Minister of Public Works and Housing, Dody Hanggodo, said the audit is being carried out in phases, beginning with 80 institutions before expanding to others.
“The first batch will cover 80 Islamic boarding schools, and we will expand the scope as soon as possible,” Dody said at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs office in Central Jakarta on Friday, October 17, 2025.
He explained that the initiative aims to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. “We hope the Sidoarjo tragedy will be the first and the last,” Dody said.
The audit is intended to assess the safety and structural integrity of religious education facilities, particularly those deemed vulnerable to collapse. “Through this audit, we will identify which buildings pose risks to students’ activities,” Dody said.
He added that priority will be given to large boarding schools with over 1,000 students, buildings over 10 years old, and multi-story structures exceeding two floors.
The Ministry of Public Works has allocated Rp25 billion for the initial phase of the audit. “The Rp25 billion budget will be used to review the first 80 schools in the initial sample,” Dody said.
