TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Sugiono spoke up about Prabowo’s plan to take in Palestinian refugees from Gaza to Indonesia. Sugiono affirmed that Prabowo only intends to accommodate Palestinians temporarily, not permanently.
"In line with the president's directives, their presence in Indonesia is temporary and is by no means intended to 'relocate' the Palestinians from their homeland," Sugiono said in a written statement on Thursday, April 10, 2025.
Sugiono also emphasized that Indonesia rejects any effort aimed at relocating or transferring Palestinians from their homeland. He stated that any effort to alter the demography of Gaza constitutes a violation of international law.
The minister explained that Indonesia is consulting other countries, especially Palestine. Additionally, Indonesia must ensure this decision is supported by countries in the Middle East as well as conducted in such ways that fully benefit the Palestinian people.
Not only that, Sugiono stated that if all parties desire and agree, Indonesia is ready to receive war casualties, especially civilians, for treatment and care in Indonesia.
"In addition to the injured victims, Indonesia is ready to receive orphaned children who are victims of war and require care due to the trauma they have experienced," he said.
Sugiono stated that Indonesia will consistently push for a two-state solution, while at the same time advocate for the cessation of all forms of violence. He also added that Indonesia is ready to engage in a broader role if requested by all relevant parties.
President Prabowo Subianto aims to evacuate a number of Gaza residents to Indonesia and embarked on a Middle East tour to seek support from five countries—the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, and Jordan.
Prabowo emphasized that Indonesia will carry out its plan if given the green light from all parties, including countries actively assisting the people of Gaza.
"The conditions are all parties must agree to this plan. Secondly, they (Palestinians) are here only temporarily until they recover, and when they are healthy again, and when the conditions in Gaza allow, they must return to their homeland," Prabowo said during a press conference at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, Jakarta, before departing for Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, early on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
"That’s the Indonesian government's stance. Therefore, I have to consult with the leaders of the region (Middle East)."
