How 'Colony' Brings a New Twist to the Korean Zombie Genre

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Korean zombie genre welcomes a new addition with Colony, the latest film from acclaimed South Korean director Yeon Sang-ho.

After revitalizing zombie cinema with the global hit Train to Busan, Yeon returns with a more ambitious story that introduces a new type of zombie: one capable of evolving, learning, and developing collective intelligence.

The film has generated significant buzz not only for its fresh take on the zombie genre but also for its star-studded cast, which includes Jun Ji-hyun, Ji Chang-wook, Koo Kyo-hwan, and Shin Hyun-been.

Colony also received international recognition after making its world premiere in the Midnight Screenings section of the Cannes Film Festival.

The film follows Kwon Se-jeong, a biotechnology professor attending a scientific conference at Dunguri Building. What begins as an ordinary event quickly descends into chaos when a mysterious virus with a rapid mutation rate is released inside the building.

Within a short period, those infected transform into violent creatures, turning the conference venue into a deadly battleground. The crisis escalates when authorities impose a full quarantine on the building, trapping survivors inside alongside a growing number of infected individuals.

Throughout the film, Se-jeong and the other survivors must navigate a desperate fight for survival while trying to understand the behavior of the infected.

Unlike traditional zombies driven purely by instinct, the creatures in Colony can learn, adapt, and share information through a collective consciousness. This “hive mind” system becomes one of the film’s defining concepts and a key source of tension throughout the story.

Jun Ji-hyun, Ji Chang-wook Lead the Ensemble

Actress Jun Ji-hyun plays Kwon Se-jeong, a biotechnology professor who lost her academic position because of her refusal to tolerate corruption and injustice. When the outbreak begins, she becomes a central figure in the fight for survival, using her scientific expertise to understand the virus and protect those around her.

Se-jeong is portrayed as intelligent, resilient, and capable of making rational decisions under extreme pressure. Her scientific knowledge proves to be one of the survivors’ most valuable assets.

The role marks one of Jun Ji-hyun’s most prominent film projects in recent years following her acclaimed performances in the television series My Love from the Star and Kingdom: Ashin of the North.

Ji Chang-wook stars as Choi Hyeon-seok, a member of the building’s security team who becomes trapped when the outbreak begins. While Se-jeong relies on science, Hyeon-seok serves as one of the survivors’ primary defenders against the infected.

His determination is driven by a personal mission: protecting his sister, Choi Hyeon-hee, who is also trapped inside the building. Family loyalty becomes a major theme in his storyline.

What Sets Colony Apart?

At a time when zombie stories continue to thrive across film and television, Colony sets itself apart with its innovative take on the undead.

Rather than acting purely on instinct, the zombies in the film develop a form of collective intelligence. They can share information, learn from previous encounters, and adapt to human strategies. As the number of infected grows, so do their capabilities, making them an increasingly formidable threat.

The concept is inspired by the communication systems of ant colonies, in which individual members operate as part of a larger, highly coordinated network. This hive-mind approach gives Colony a distinctive edge in a genre often dominated by more conventional portrayals of zombies.

Beyond its horror elements, Colony combines science-fiction thriller, action, and social commentary—hallmarks of director Yeon Sang-ho’s filmmaking style. The result is a film that not only delivers suspense and terror but also offers a fresh perspective on the evolution of the modern zombie genre.

Much of the anticipation surrounding Colony stems from Yeon’s reputation as one of South Korea’s leading genre filmmakers. He is best known for directing the critically acclaimed zombie blockbuster Train to Busan and for helping expand the global appeal of Korean zombie storytelling through projects such as Peninsula and the Kingdom franchise.

With its high-profile cast, original premise, and Yeon’s distinctive creative vision, Colony has emerged as one of the most anticipated Korean horror-thrillers of 2026.
