Google Rolls out AI-Powered Chrome Tools to Protect Users Against Scams

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Google continues its efforts to develop features to enhance the comfort and security of its users. Recently, Google announced that it will use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to assist in protecting Chrome browser users from scams.

"Today, we're releasing a new report on how we fight scams in Search, and sharing the new ways we're using AI to keep you safe across Search, Chrome and Android," Google stated in a blog post on Thursday, May 8, 2025.

AI-Powered Chrome Security for Android 

As quoted from TechCrunch, the tech giant will begin using Gemini Nano, an on-device large language model (LLM), on desktops to combat online scams on Chrome. Google also introduced AI-powered warnings on Chrome for Android to help users identify potential spam or misleading notifications.

According to Google, Enhanced Protection mode in Safe Browsing on Chrome offers a higher level of protection against phishing and other online threats compared to the Standard Protection mode for browsers.

Google is now using Gemini Nano to provide an additional layer of defense against online scam schemes for users in Enhanced Protection mode. "LLM Gemini Nano is well suited for use due to its ability to filter various and complex websites, helping us to adapt more quickly to new scam tactics," said Google.

Google has been using this AI-based defense tool to protect users from remote technical support scam schemes. The company plans to expand the use of this protection support to Android devices and broaden its coverage to other types of scams.

Google notes that the risk of scam sites can extend beyond the sites themselves through notifications if users enable them. Malicious websites can use notifications in an attempt to deceive users, which is why Chrome now seeks to help users be wary of malicious, spam, or misleading notifications on Android.

When the machine learning model on Chrome marks a notification as potentially fraudulent, users will receive a warning. If they deem the warning to be incorrect, users can allow all notifications from that site.

As quoted from Antara, Google also revealed that they have been using AI to detect and block hundreds of millions of search results indicated as scams in Search every day in an effort to combat fraud.

Google's AI-based scam detection system has successfully detected 20 times more scam pages than before, according to the company. For example, Google has seen an increase in criminals posing as airline customer service agents and deceiving people seeking assistance.

The company claims to have reduced such criminal activities by more than 80 percent, reducing the likelihood of users encountering scam phone numbers during searches.
