TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A strong earthquake struck Poso, Central Sulawesi, on Thursday night, July 24, 2025. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reports that the earthquake, which occurred at 09:06 p.m. local time, had a magnitude of 5.7, updated from the initial 6.0 magnitude.
The inland earthquake's epicenter was located in Poso, with a depth of 10 kilometers. "The earthquake was shallow due to the active faults activity in the Poso Fault Zone," said the post-tremor explanation shared by BMKG's earthquake and tsunami center director, Daryono.
According to BMKG, the earthquake was felt in Poso, Kolonodale, and Mangkutana at a IV-V MMI scale.
Meanwhile, the Palopo, Toraja, Mappadeceng, and Bungku areas were shaken at a scale of III-IV MMI, felt by many people indoors, and Palu at a scale of II-III MMI, where the vibrations were felt by some people and caused light hanging objects to sway.
BMKG also reported that until 09:40 p.m., monitoring results showed 11 aftershocks, with the strongest magnitude at 5.5 and the smallest at 2.4 magnitude. The agency urges residents to remain calm and "avoid buildings cracked or damaged due to the earthquake."
