Indonesia: E-Commerce Tax Implementation Pending 6% Economic Growth

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Director General of Taxes at the Ministry of Finance, Bimo Wijayanto, said the implementation of e-commerce tax is postponed, after Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa called for it to be delayed until Indonesia's economic growth reaches 6 percent.

Previously, he said the tax collection for online marketplaces would be implemented in February 2026. "But he gave a new directive to wait until the economic growth reaches 6 percent," said Bimo at the central office of the Directorate General of Taxation (DGT) in Jakarta, on Monday, October 20, 2025.

The new policy regarding e-commerce tax was previously announced by former Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati on June 11, 2024. Through this policy, the government assigned e-commerce platforms such as Shopee and Tokopedia to collect taxes from online merchants. The policy is laid out under ministerial regulation (PMK) No. 37 of 2025, which took effect on July 14, 2025, until revoked.

Bimo explained that the tax payments are based on self-assessments. Each individual who has a certain level of economic capability, such as MSMEs with an income of over Rp500 million per year, must independently report a tax return (SPT) for their economic activities subject to tax.

The PMK on e-commerce tax, designates marketplaces to collect taxes from participating merchants or sellers on their platform. "This would be postponed, in accordance with Pak Minister [Purbaya] directive, until the economic growth is optimistic toward, let's say, 6 percent," he said.

The Directorate General of Taxes believes this measure will drive tax compliance from merchants, as they can easily make income tax payments.
