TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Israeli airstrike killed Palestinian journalist Walaa al-Jabari and her entire family in Gaza City on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. Quoted from Middle East Eye, Jabari's house in the Tal al-Hawa area, southwest Gaza, was destroyed in the attack. At the time, Jabari was reportedly pregnant. Her husband, Amjad al-Shaer, and their four children also fell victim to the strike.
Death Toll of Journalists Reaches 231
Jabari, known as a newspaper editor, had worked for various local media outlets in Palestine. She became one of the hundreds of journalists killed since the Israeli military aggression in Gaza began in October 2023. According to a report from the Gaza Government Media Office quoted by Yemen News Agency (Saba), the number of killed journalists has now reached 231 people.
Earlier, Israeli forces shot and killed Tamer al-Zaanin, a photojournalist working for several media outlets, in a raid near the Red Cross facility in Rafah. In the operation, Israeli secret units also arrested Dr. Marwan al-Hams, the Director of the Field Hospital in Gaza.
Condemnation for the Killing of Journalists
The Gaza Government Media Office condemned the killings of the two journalists. "We also call on them to exert serious and effective pressure to stop the crime of genocide, protect journalists and media professionals in the Gaza Strip, and stop the murder and assassination of them," the statement said.
They also urged for serious and effective pressure to stop the genocide, protect journalists and media workers in Gaza, and halt the killings and massacres.
The Gaza Government Media Office also called on the International Federation of Journalists, the Arab Journalists Union, and press organizations worldwide to take a stand against this violence. They referred to Israel, along with the United States, Britain, Germany, and France, as responsible for what they called brutal and heinous crimes.
"We ask God Almighty to grant all our martyred colleagues and journalists mercy, acceptance, and Paradise, and to grant their families and the Palestinian press family patience and solace. We also wish a speedy recovery to all the wounded journalists," they added.
