Energy Minister Floats ASEAN Oil Storage Hub in Indonesia

2 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia has proposed for Indonesia to host the construction of an oil reserve storage hub for ASEAN countries.

"We will build storage anywhere, but I proposed Indonesia yesterday," Bahlil said on Monday, adding that Indonesia will partner with Brunei, Malaysia, and the Philippines to realize the proposal.

To date, there has been no agreement on where to build a regional oil storage hub for ASEAN member countries.

The storage hub is expected to support energy supply for countries in Southeast Asia. "We formulated the idea of establishing a hub for oil reserves for ASEAN countries. This is a good idea," Bahlil said.

This statement was related to the results of Bahlil's visit to the Philippines while joining President Prabowo Subianto to discuss strategic energy sector issues at the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines, on May 7–8, 2026.

During this visit, President Prabowo and ASEAN Heads of State discussed various regional strategic agendas, including strengthening ASEAN energy cooperation and security.

As part of this agenda, Bahlil accompanied the President at all meetings discussing strategic energy sector issues of mutual concern to ASEAN countries.

In addition to the development of storage hubs, cross-border electricity interconnection in the region and energy diversification were also discussed.

The meeting aimed to ensure energy security and resilience in the ASEAN region through energy diversification efforts, which are key to addressing the ongoing global energy crisis.
