Chile Withdraws Military Attache from Israel Over Gaza Genocide

1 day ago 5

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chile has announced that it will withdraw its military, defense, and air force attachs from Israel on Wednesday, citing the appalling humanitarian conditions faced by the Palestinian people in Gaza.

The Foreign Ministry (Kemlu) as reported by Anadolu stated that the decision to withdraw the military, defense, and air force attachs from the Chilean Embassy in Tel Aviv has been communicated to the Israeli authorities.

The ministry stated that this decision, coordinated with the Ministry of Defense, stemmed from "a very serious humanitarian situation currently experienced by the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip."

It specifically mentioned "disproportionate and indiscriminate military operations by the Israeli army," as well as "continual hindrances to allow aid" to enter the besieged Palestinian territory.

According to the Kemlu website, the officials being recalled include Defense and Air Force Attach Colonel Christian Stuardo Nunez, Military Attach Colonel Marcelo Elo Rodriguez, and Navy Attach Captain Pedro Perez Flores.

This latest action highlights the pattern of diplomatic tensions between President Gabriel Boric's administration and Israel since he took office. Significant friction arose in September 2022 when Boric refused to meet with Israeli Ambassador Gil Artzyeli at the La Moneda Palace to receive his credentials.

Tensions flared up again in April 2024 when Boric banned Israel from attending the International Air and Space Exhibition (FIDAE), which was interpreted by Tel Aviv as a political sanction, further worsening bilateral relations.

Boric then summoned the Chilean Ambassador to Israel for consultations in November 2023 after bombings at refugee camps and announced his government's support for South Africa's lawsuit against Israel in the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

In the statement, the Chilean government reiterated its demand for Israel to "halt its military operations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, allow the entry of humanitarian aid, and respect international law and international humanitarian law."

Earlier on Wednesday, at least 24 Palestinian civilians were killed in a series of deadly Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip, marking the 600th day of the deadly conflict.
