TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The ChatGPT search feature has seen significant growth in Europe over the past six months, ending on March 31, 2025. According to a report from OpenAI Ireland Limited, one of OpenAI’s corporate divisions in the European Union, ChatGPT search had an average of approximately 41.3 million monthly active users during these six months, TechCrunch reported on Monday, April 21, 2025. This marks a sharp increase from the roughly 11.2 million average monthly active users recorded in the previous six-month period ending October 31, 2024.
What Is the Function of ChatGPT Search?
ChatGPT search is a feature that allows users to get answers to their questions through conversational interaction. When a user asks a question naturally, ChatGPT can choose to respond with information from the web. ChatGPT conversations now include links to various sources such as news articles and blog posts.
Users can click the Sources button beneath a response to open a sidebar containing references. OpenAI also partners with news and data providers to add up-to-date information and new visual designs for categories like weather, stocks, sports, news, and maps.
ChatGPT search is powered by GPT-4o, which is trained using a new synthetic data generation technique. It leverages third-party search providers and content directly supplied by partners to deliver the information users are looking for.
ChatGPT Search in Europe
OpenAI published data related to ChatGPT search to comply with the Digital Services Act (DSA) of the European Union, which regulates various aspects of online services in European countries. The DSA defines monthly active users as individuals who interact with a service at least once within a given period, such as by viewing, listening to, or providing information on an online platform.
One key provision of the DSA requires online platforms or search engines with more than 45 million average monthly active users to allow users to opt out of recommendation systems, share certain data with researchers and authorities, and undergo external audits.
Online platforms that fail to comply with DSA rules could face fines of up to 6 percent of their global revenue.
