Bali Plans Sea Taxi Route to Ease Canggu Traffic

4 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Bali Deputy Governor I Nyoman Giri Prasta stated that sea routes via water taxi services are one solution to reduce congestion in the Canggu area, especially from I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport.

"The sea toll (sea taxi route) is a must, it has been planned, so that people going to Canggu from Ngurah Rai Airport can go directly to Canggu and no longer have to travel by land," Giri said after the Bali Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) Plenary Session in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia, on Monday, May 18, 2026.

This statement was made in response to the proliferation of social media content showing severe traffic congestion in the Canggu area, especially on the Canggu Shortcut route.

Giri Prasta, who previously served as the Regent of Badung, acknowledged that the congestion problem in the area has not been optimally resolved.

According to him, the Canggu Shortcut cannot be widened due to limited space and the presence of Hindu places of worship near the route.

Therefore, the Bali Provincial Government, together with the Badung Regency Government and the central government, is seeking an alternative solution by developing a sea taxi route from I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport to Canggu.

"Since I took office, I've only been able to complete one shortcut, and even that wasn't optimal because the road was already in its current state, and it wasn't possible to widen it because there are Hindu places of worship, such as merajans, and they couldn't be moved," said Giri Prasta.

To support sea taxi services, the government plans to build several stopover points at several locations. In addition, the coastline will be widened to 120 meters above sea level.

According to Giri, these stopover points will also function as breakwaters to prevent ocean waves from directly hitting the coastline along the sea taxi route.

With this sea route, the public will have an alternative travel route other than the Canggu Shortcut or traffic engineering on land routes.

While not prioritizing road construction in the Canggu area, the Bali Provincial Government remains focused on addressing congestion in several other areas on the Island of the Gods.

"We will improve road facilities, including by communicating with the central government about the Astungkara underpass this year in Jimbaran, and in the future, we will also have one in Tohpati," he said.
