Aceh to Implement Night Curfew on Students

9 hours ago 6

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Aceh Provincial Government has banned students from leaving the residences after 10 p.m. local time, with the exception of urgent matters.

The curfew is regulated under the Circular Letter of the Aceh Education Office Number 400.3.8/5936 of 2025 concerning the control of students' activities during nighttime.

Head of the Aceh Education Office, Marthunis, said on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, that the government is encouraging parents to "ensure their children are not roaming outside after 10:00 p.m." except for urgent matters and under adult supervision.

Marthunis said the curfew is implemented to prevent juvenile delinquency, which often occurs late at night. This regulation is also part of the government's efforts to improve the academic quality, vocation, and character of students, especially at secondary and special education levels.

He mentioned that the regulation refers to Islamic values laid out in the Qur'an and hadiths that emphasize the importance of early sleep and waking up early. Thus, he said, the Aceh government is committed to instilling religious values in the daily habits of students.

The government expects students to utilize the curfew to study or have discussions with their family members at home, as frequent interactions between parents and children are believed to be an effective tool to control children.

"We do not wish for our children to be solely smart academically, but they must also have strong character and time discipline," said Marthunis. "Uncontrolled night activities can have a negative impact on their academic performance and behavior."

He stated that the Aceh Education Office will monitor the implementation of the circular through reports from educational units and regional education service branches. The Education Office will evaluate it regularly to ensure the effective implementation of the curfew for students.
