TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tourists disembarking from Greece via cruise ships will have to dig deeper into their pockets. Starting July 21, 2025, the local government will enforce a sustainable tourism fee. This fee is an additional cost for passengers disembarking on certain islands.
According to the Greek Port Association, approximately 768 cruise ships and 1.29 million tourists visited Mykonos last year, as quoted from Euronews. As the name suggests, the sustainable tourism fee is intended to reduce over tourism and assist in repairing the infrastructure on the most popular islands, especially for passengers in Mykonos and Santorini.
Additional Fees for Tourists
The additional fees for tourists depend on the period and the destination island. From June 1 to September 30, tourists disembarking at the ports of Mykonos and Santorini will be charged 20 euros. Meanwhile, at other ports, the fee will be 5 euros.
During the off-peak season, which is October, April 1, and May 31, the fee for tourists stopping at the ports of Mykonos and Santorini will be reduced to 12 euros, while the fee for other ports will be 3 euros. During the winter months, from November 1 to March 31, the fees will be only 4 euros for Mykonos and Santorini, and 1 euro for other ports.
No Payment, No Disembarkation
The Greek government announced this fee through a specific digital platform for shipping company heads or responsible agents who are required to pay the additional cost. Shipping companies and agents will be responsible for paying this fee every quarter. If shipping companies fail to pay the money, port authorities can prohibit cruise ships from stopping and tourists from disembarking on the Greek islands.
As quoted from Euronews, MSC Cruises has released a statement explaining that the fee will be added directly to passengers' accounts on the night before visiting a Greek island port. Passengers who choose to remain on the ship will not be subject to the additional tax, and the fee will be automatically waived from their account within 24 hours.
In addition to Greece, Norway also plans to impose an additional fee for cruise ship passengers starting in 2026. The additional fees for cruise ship passengers are part of the new tourist tax plan. The country welcomed nearly six million cruise ship passengers in 2024. The three most frequently visited ports include Alesund, Bergen, and Stavanger.
However, this tourist fee is voluntary, meaning the governments of each Norwegian region can choose whether to impose it. Regional governments that impose the tax can use the money to invest in services such as hiking trails and facilities.
