TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - ChatGPT was widely downloaded in March 2025. ChatGPT has surpassed Instagram and TikTok, which usually occupy the top positions. Quoted from Antara, this is the first time ChatGPT has ranked first in the monthly download list.
A report from application analytics provider Appfigures explains that according to the latest data, the number of ChatGPT downloads jumped 28 percent from February to 46 million new downloads in March 2025. The platform gained 13 million downloads on iOS and 33 million on Android.
This achievement puts ChatGPT slightly ahead of Instagram, which dropped to second place in the list of most downloaded applications. Instagram received the same number of downloads but with a different distribution, 5 million on iOS and 41 million on Android. Meanwhile, TikTok is in third place with 45 million downloads — 8 million on iOS and 37 million on Android.
Studio Ghibli Style
The drastic increase in ChatGPT installations was driven by a number of significant feature updates, including better image creation capabilities and improved AI voice features. Since the end of March 2025, OpenAI has released a new image that allows users to create images in the style of popular animations such as Studio Ghibli.
This feature makes ChatGPT not just a text chatbot, but a multifunctional tool. OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap explained that in less than two weeks after the launch of the latest image feature, users had produced more than 700 million images, with more than 130 million active users, quoted from Antara.
ChatGPT is Getting More Popular
Appfigures CEO Ariel Michaeli explained that the increase in the number of users was not solely due to new features, but because ChatGPT was becoming better known. Public interest in AI also encouraged people to immediately search for and download ChatGPT when they wanted to try this sophisticated technology.
AI Dominance
When ChatGPT was on the rise, TikTok began to face obstacles due to potential bans in the United States. Instagram became the most popular non-game application throughout 2024. This platform still maintains a strong position in the American market. A survey by Piper Sandler shows that 87 percent of American teenagers use Instagram every month. However, global trends show that AI applications like ChatGPT are starting to take over that dominant space.
The shift to GPT-4o
ChatGPT’s peak popularity also coincides with a major transition in AI models. OpenAI announced that GPT-4, which was first launched in March 2023, will be completely replaced by GPT-4o starting April 30, 2025. ChatGPT claims that GPT-4o is seen as superior in terms of writing and programming. GPT-4o is also claimed to be able to handle multimodal input including text, voice, and images simultaneously.
Asian Market Potential
OpenAI noted that India is now the market with the fastest growth of ChatGPT users. This shows the huge potential of ChatGPT in the Asian region with its growing digital population. “We appreciate your patience as we try to serve everyone,” Brad Lightcap wrote in his post on X.
